25 Things to Write in Your Journal When You Don’t Know What to Write

Sometimes you want to journal, you open to a fresh page…and suddenly you have absolutely no idea what to write.

The good news? Journaling doesn’t have to start with a deep question or a perfectly written page. You can write about what happened today, something you’re looking forward to, a thought you can’t stop thinking about—or simply whatever is taking up space in your head.

If you’re staring at a blank page, here are 25 things to write in your journal to help you get started.

Journal Ideas to Get You Started

1. Today’s thoughts

Start exactly where you are. What have you been thinking about today? Write it down without worrying about making it sound polished or profound.

2. Three things you’re grateful for

Write down three things you appreciate today. They can be big, small, meaningful or completely ordinary.

3. A recent win

What went well recently? Give yourself credit for something you accomplished, handled or simply made it through.

4. What’s worrying you

Put the thoughts circling in your mind onto paper. You don’t have to solve them—sometimes writing them down is enough for today.

5. What you need to release

Write about something you’ve been carrying that you would like to loosen your grip on, even just a little.

6. What made you smile

Think back over your day or week. What was one moment, person, conversation or tiny thing that made you smile?

7. Your current goal

Write down something you’re working toward and why it matters to you. Then choose one small step you could take next.

8. What you’re avoiding

Is there something you keep putting off? Explore what makes you want to avoid it and what might make the first step feel more manageable.

9. A favorite memory

Choose a memory you never want to forget. Write about the people, place, little details and how you felt in that moment.

10. What you need right now

Ask yourself a simple question: “What do I need today?” Write the first answer that comes to mind without judging it.

11. A lesson you learned

Think about something life has taught you recently. What happened, and what would you tell your past self now?

12. Something you’re proud of

Write about something you’re proud of—even if nobody else knows how difficult it was for you.

13. Your perfect day

If you could design a day just for you, what would it look like from morning to night? Where would you be, who would be there and how would you spend your time?

14. What you’re excited for

Give yourself something to look forward to. Write about an upcoming plan, a goal, a season, or even one small thing you’re excited about.

15. A letter to your future self

Write to yourself six months or a year from now. Tell future you what life feels like today, what you’re working toward and what you hope has changed.

16. A total brain dump

No structure. No rules. Write down everything occupying your mind—tasks, thoughts, ideas, worries, reminders and random observations.

17. What you want to change

Choose one area of your life you’d like to change. Instead of trying to fix everything at once, write about one realistic first step.

18. Three things you love about yourself

Think beyond appearance. Write about qualities, strengths, quirks, values or parts of yourself you genuinely appreciate.

19. A fear you want to face

What would you try if fear didn’t get to make the decision? Write about the fear, what uncertainty comes with it and what one small brave step might look like.

20. What’s taking up headspace

What keeps popping back into your mind lately? Give it somewhere to go by putting it on the page.

21. Someone you appreciate

Write about someone who has made a difference in your life. What do you appreciate about them? What would you want them to know?

22. A boundary you need

Think about where your time or energy feels stretched. Is there somewhere you need to say no, ask for space or protect more of your time?

23. What you want to remember

Capture something from this season of your life that you don’t want time to erase—the ordinary details often become the ones we treasure later.

24. What you’d do without fear

Imagine fear is no longer making the rules. Where would you go? What would you try? What would you say yes to? Let yourself write without figuring out whether it’s realistic yet.

25. How you want tomorrow to feel

Instead of only writing a to-do list, choose how you want tomorrow to feel. Calm? Creative? Connected? Productive? Then write one small thing that could help create more of that feeling.

You Don’t Need the Perfect Words

Your journal doesn’t have to be beautiful, organized or worthy of showing anyone else. It can hold the good days, messy thoughts, unfinished sentences, dreams, worries and completely ordinary moments.

The goal isn’t to journal perfectly. It’s simply to give your thoughts somewhere to land.
